At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, nuclear energy is one of Armenia's main sources of energy and plays a crucial role in national energy supply. In the context of modern tariffing, the tendency to increase the competitiveness of nuclear energy has been clearly established. Today, the gap between the high cost of electricity in thermal power plants and the low cost of electricity in nuclear power plants is widening. This is due not only to the steady rise in prices for natural gas and other fuels, but also to the increase in the efficiency of the operation of hydropower plants.

The decision to build a nuclear power plant in the South Caucasus. 1966 In September, the USSR Council of Ministers decided to build a nuclear power plant in Armenia. The research and design of the construction site of the Nuclear Power Plant of Armenia (ANPP) and the design task, as well as the engineering-geological research were carried out in advance by the "Tepeloelectroproject" institute.

At the beginning of the works, more than 20 competitive construction sites were discussed. As a result of studying and analyzing the materials, a site located in the western part of the Ararat Valley, located 16 km from the Turkish border, 10 km northeast of the regional center Hoktemberyan (Armavir) and 28 km west of Yerevan, was selected for the construction of the nuclear power plant. The technical task of designing the ANPP was developed at the "Tepeloelectro Project" institute in 1968. and 1969. It was approved by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the USSR N 1624 on August 4, 2006. In the same year, the institute started working on working documents. The power of the first line of the ANPP, consisting of two power units with VVER-440 reactor installations, was set at 815.0 MW and the capacity of each power unit was 407.5 MW. The design period for the operation of the power units was set at 30 years.

The peculiarity of the construction site of the ANPP, seismicity, caused the radical changes not only in the construction part of the VVER-440/230 project, but also in the whole reactor plant, as a result of which the reactor received a new designation - V-270. The reliably designed structure of the reactor plant later fully justified itself during the operation of the nuclear power plant.
