This book is dedicated to my son Malik who is on the spectrum. This book was created to help parents understand and learn how to deal with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Hello, I am Malik. I have Autism.

What is Autism? Autism is a Neurological Development Condition   that affects communication and behavior, it happens inside the brain. My brain works differently. I do things in my own unique way.

I sometimes get bothered by small things such as noises, sight, smell, touch, and taste. This is called Sensory Disorder. When I hear a loud an unexpected siren, I get scared and cover my ears. Noises are much louder with children who have Autism. I also do not like sticky or slimy things, but I do like to eat crunchy and sweet foods. 

Autism affects each person differently. Some may lack eye contact. When I am at the park with my friends, I do not look at them directly. Others will not talk because of lack of communication skills. They will use other ways to talk. Some will point, some will flap their hands, and others will rock back and forth. I can speak, but only in three-word phrase such as “I love you” and “I want chips.”

Kids with Autism are fascinated with certain objects. They can tell you every fact about an object. I love cars. I have thousands of cars. Sometimes, I line up my cars. I love numbers and I can solve problems, like Albert Einstein. He was also Autistic. I love to learn and explore.
