Yesterday, the mailman delivered a huge
wooden crate. It was four feet long and four
feet high and sealed with nails everywhere. I
tried to carry it into the house but it was too
heavy.

So, I got my hammer and started to carefully
remove the nails. It took a minute to slip the
hammer under the closely driven in nail. Using
the hammer as a lever, I pushed down with all
my weight and slowly the nail squeaked out of
the wood. Repeating this ritual another fifty
times, caused sweat to drip off my forehead
and blisters to pop up on my reddened hands.
Finally, each side of the box and the top lay
strewn on my driveway.

The plastic wrap reflected the bright sun on this cool
spring day. My dog, Bailey, started barking at the
square ice-cube like package, as if to say she will
protect me. I started to unwrap the package. Around
and around the square I went as the plastic
transformed into a huge hand warmer. Colors of black,
bright blue, red and yellow began to show through.
Nothing was moving and there were no sounds. I
quieted Bailey and took the plastic wrap off my hands.

Now unveiled was the biggest box of Legos I had
ever seen!

As I circled the colorful cube, I spotted an
envelope that I hoped contained the answer to
this mystery. I reached up and heard the
familiar tear of the tape and then the paper as
I hurriedly searched for the answer. The letter
was from my son, Steven, who is an engineer
in Las Vegas.

"I know you miss your children and all those days
we played games together. I hope this keeps you
busy and reminds you of the fun we had
together. Love you-Steven"

On the Lego's box was a picture of the
Bellagio Hotel and their fountains. The Lego's
dancing fountains actually worked too! It was a
grown-up version of those Legos my three
children and I played so long ago. The new
Legos were just as beautiful and exciting as
the earlier versions, but with an added
complexity and maturity. They were the bridge
from the past to the future, and a reminder
that both places had their own mysteries and
beauty.
