CHAPTER ONE: THE NEW GUEST
Cooper was sitting at his reading table on Rocky River Farm, completing his math homework that his teacher, Mrs. Brooks had assigned the class. Suddenly, in the snowy woods, there was a strange noise coming from the barn in the backyard.
"What was that noise?" Cooper asked.
Mom stopped stirring the stew and looked at Dad.
"I don't remember inviting any guests," he said. "I'd better go check on the barn, before it gets late out." He lit the lantern, grabbed his rifle from the rack, and headed to the closet. Dad clutched his coat and put it on. He fastened his leather belt to his waist. Cooper followed him to the door and onto the front porch.
"Stay here, son," he told Cooper. "I can handle this."
Mom opened the door, next to the patio, and brought in some more wood from the shed. She stacked the wood in the fireplace, and managed to stay warm.
Cooper read his math answers aloud to himself: "eight times five," he had written. "Is thirty-two." Cooper wasn't sure if he'd gotten the answer right.
"Mom, what is eight times five?"
"Forty," said Mom. "Am I correct?"
"I guess so,"
Cooper saw his mistake, erased the the thirty-two, and replaced it with a forty.
They both looked up when they heard Dad open the door and kick the snow off his boots.
"You folks won't believe this," Dad said. "The barn is alright . . . but we do have a new agent."
Dad had a bag with something in it! It was moving!
"I was thinking, Maria," Dad said to Mom. "We might need lots of equipment, lots of equipment."
"What is it, Dan?" Mom asked. "What's going on?"
"Dad, let me see what's inside the bag?" Cooper interrupted.
Dad continued, "We need a bed, food, bowls, feed, and toys. A whole lots a toys,"
"What for?" Mom asked. She dropped the dishes she was washing and took her apron off.
"I found a dog," Dad exclaimed. "I found a little dog in the barn next to the horses!"
Cooper was shocked. He beamed with laughter. "Can we keep the dog?" Cooper asked in excitement. "I promise, I'll do all my chores, I'll eat all my vegetables, and I'll never hit Andy again! Honest."
"Ok," Dad agreed. "We'll keep the dog. But now, let's go milk the cows."

CHAPTER TWO: A NEW HOME
That weekend, Cooper and Andy, Cooper's little brother, walked up the cobblestone steps, and headed towards the huge wooden gates at the shed. The dog cocked his head to the side in a quizzically facial expression.

While Andy and Cooper were feeding the chickens in the barn, Dad and Mom went to shop for dog supplies.
"We're almost done with the list," Dad said, swinging the handbasket back and forth. Mom dug into her pockets and brought out a piece of paper with the list of supplies on it.
"What do we have left?" Mom asked in wonder.
Dad read over the list for a moment and nodded his head.
"We forgot to purchase the kernel for the dog," he said. "Let's head over to section five of the department."
After many minutes of decision making, they'd bought a wooden kernel, which could fit the small dog.

Andy and Cooper finished all their chores for the day. They went inside and grabbed the little pup sitting by the fireplace. Cooper stroked his brown fur gently until the dog nearly fell asleep. Andy patted the dog's head and gave it belly rubs.
"I really like this dog," Andy said. He touched his long, curly tail.
"It's certainly cute for a dog that'd been out there for a week or two now," Cooper agreed. "I wonder what his life was before Dad met him back in the barn?"
"Must've been a mess," Andy suggested.
"He was probably hungry, and tried to get a few of those eggs in the chicken coop," Cooper said.
The dog did that same look when he cocked his head to the side and gave a quizzically facial expression. He tucked his tail in between his legs, like he'd understood the conversation Andy and Cooper had. He let out a little squeal.

They went inside and grabbed the little pup sitting by the fireplace.
