Mika was hungry. She didn't want fruit or yogurt from the fridge.
Her roommate, Hana, said, "We have no food and need to go to the store."
Mika had not been to the supermarket yet since she arrived in America. She didn't know what to do. "Hana," she asked, "will you help me go?"
Hana agreed to help her new friend.
Mika saw the store and smiled. "It's so big! I love this store! So many colors and foods!"
Hana said, "Yes, I know! I love it too. Get a shopping cart first."
Mika yelled, "I'm in the USA! I'm in my first grocery store!"
Hana smiled and went to get a cart.
Hana taught Mika all about the produce area. "We can get fruits and vegetables in the produce area."
"Oh apples! I want to get apples! What?" Mika wondered as she picked up a peach.
Hana taught Mika about peaches and other fruits and vegetables. Even though Mika used good English, Hana told her some English questions to ask if she is alone in the supermarket. "You can say, 'what is this?' or 'what is that?' when you don't know. People will help you."
"What is this?" Mika practiced her new sentences.
Hana taught Mika how to pronounce and weigh green beans, pears, lemons, potatoes, melons, and onions.
"Do we need so much food?" Mika asked.
Hana laughed, "No, I am teaching you for next time you come to the store." She took some potatoes and pushed the cart to the next area.
"What is that there?" Mika asked.
Mika walked over to some other fruits.
Hana picked up some cherries. "These?"
Mika said, "No, I know cherries. I mean these." She picked up an avocado.
Hana said, "this is an avocado. I like them. We can make a good green dip with it. Our neighbor Javier will come make some if you want to try it."
Mika smiled to think she may have a new friend.
Mika picked up the avocado and smelled it. "Avocado," she practiced as she put some avocados in the cart.
Hana told her, "Javier is from Mexico, and there they have avocados in many foods. It is good food. I hope you will try it."
Mika asked, "Do you have avocados in your country, in Korea?"
Hana smiled and said, "No, but I like them."
