CHapter 1

The person in charge of the trade asked the king for new trade routes to india because theres were dangerous and so they could possibly find new goods along the way.

This is called the age of exploration because during this time is when people were looking for more people to trade with, and ended up finding a whole lot more than what they thought they would.
Instead, they finding new trade patterns they found "new land". It wasn't America but it was the Bahamas and the islands around it.

When they found this land Christopher Columbus wanted to be the leader. He self-appointed himself to do so. While he was a leader, he did some bad things.
Some of the things that he did was responsible for the deaths of 3 million people. He also was responsible for human trafficking. After this he was taken out power and imprisoned.
*Turn and Talk About human trafficking, what is it? Why is this bad, and why you think they did this.

The 4 G's also had an important part in this they stand for gold, glory, goods, and god. They were what these people most valued in life.
Another reason that they traveled was that they wanted to spread their religion, Christianity. For a long time, they thought that there was only one right religion.

Chapter 2:
Exploration and trade
There were many explorers in the 15th-17th century, including prince henry, bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da gama, Christopher columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, Hernan cortes, Francisco Pizarro, and Sir francis Drake.

2. Have you heard of any of these explorers?

These explorers pushed the boundaries of exploring new ways and land. When some of the explorers were looking for new trade routes by sailing the water they didn't know about north and south america.

Without so they thought they had made it to asia, africa, and the indies. There were also some explorers who traveled in order to take money, and wealth from other countries.
Through the 17th and 18th century, there was a trade group called the dutch east india company. They controlled a lot of trade of spices like nutmeg and cinnamon. They were able to gain control by finding the big areas of trade. This area of land, the netherlands was controlled by a bunch of people all over the country.

Turn and talk questions:
What do you think trade is like today?
What are some places we trade with still?

Chapter 3
Columbian Exchange

The Columbian Exchange started when Cristopher Columbus began trading with the natives. He forced a lot of them into slavery. He would make them work in the mines for Gold.
One good thing that came out of this was new animals and foods. They traded many things including spices, salt, fruits, vegetables, and even animals. Along with tangible goods, Natives passed on the disease Syphilis. In turn, the Columbus crew passed diseases such as Chicken Pox and the flu.

As soon as I arrived in the Indies, in the first island which I found, I took some of the natives by force, in order that they might learn and might give me information of whatever there is in these parts. -Christopher Columbus Letter to king and queen of England(1493)
In Christopher Columbus's letter to the Queen and King of England, he stated a lot about the natives and their behavior. In this specific quote, he was very clear about the fact that he took natives by force. That was only the beginning.

This chart represents what was traded from each section of the world!
