Before the sun was born the forests were dark all day and all night. The animals in the forest were petrified by the dark, so the animals talked to each other to figure out how to hide from the dark.

"What if the bear roars as loud as he can and scares the darkness away," said the squirrel. "But squirrel," explained the bear," the darkness is fearless."

"What if we climb to the tops of the trees," said the rabbit," where the darkness will never find us." "But rabbit," said the wolf," the darkness can reach the tree tops and beyond."

" What if we ask the moon for help," suggested the wolf. " That might work," said the bear," but what if she says no." "I hope she doesn't," said the rabbit.

The next day, the animals gathered in the forest when the moon was engulfing the entire sky. The wolf howled and cried to the moon begging her for warmth and light.

"Oh, great moon goddess!" cried the wolf, " We need warmth and light to survive. We can't take never ending cold much longer. We beg you to please give us some hope, light, and warmth."

The moon goddess heard their cries and searched the stars for one that could protect the Earth alongside her. 

All the stars refused to share their light and warmth. The moon traveled all across the galaxy and not one star was willing to help.
