Fields of Mercy - by Ivana Brlić Mažuranić

In the valley of a village lived poor Dragusa with her mother. On Christmas Eve, little Dragusa came out, barefoot and in a torn dress, to feed the frosty birds with crumbs of bread, as she did every day of winter. But that day Draguša and his mother had very little bread - only small fragments and crumbs remained. Seeing the big snow and the frozen birds, good Draguša was saddened and decided to give the birds a small cookie that she received as a Christmas present.

As a joyful heart shared a small cookie and licked its sweet fingers a white dove landed from the sky. Then little Dragusa heard a voice in her heart: "Little Christmas will bless you, your mercy and this field." Then he heard the faint sound of flags, the soft thud of soft feet, and saw a golden sleigh pulling two white bunnies. In the sleigh was a little Christmas in a blue suit. Little Christmas then asks Dragusa to give him the remains of the cookies to take them to the heavenly throne, and he presents her with a casket with gifts for her and her mother. From then until today, the field in which Dragusa and her mother lived has always been fertile thanks to her kindness. That is why this field is known to this day as the field of mercy.

Before the Christmas Eve dinner family members share a Christmas Wafer (oplatek) and offer each other best wishes for the upcoming year. Oplatek symbolizes and reminds us to share our last piece of bread with others.
