Insects have a variety of methods for surviving
the coldness of winter. When the days get shorter
and the temperature drops, you know winter is
coming. Humans wear fluffy coats matched with
hats and gloves...

They build warm comfortable fires to survive
the winter weather. As bugs, we prepare
ourselves differently for the winter chills.

Bugs use nature’s resources to help them
survive the winter. Monarch Butterflies can
sense the weather changing. They begin their
journey by flying south to warmer weather,
this is called migration.

But other bugs migrate from southern areas
into northern areas during the spring. These
bugs are called crop pests.

Some larvae bugs don’t have the ability to fly
to warmer weather. The woolly bear caterpillar
uses the protection of heavy covers made of
leaf litter to stay warm. Now, he is protected
from all the winter elements.

Other bugs burrow deep underground in the
soil to escape the cold.

The children (nymphs) of dragonflies and other
flying insects live in the waters of ponds and
streams. They often live beneath the ice out of
harms way.

Under the ice they feed actively to help them
grow. In spring, they emerge from beneath
the ice as adults.

Bugs like moths and silkworms enclose themselves
in shells or cocoons. This is called the pupal stage.
In the spring these bugs emerge as adults.
