SNOW FESTIVAL IN TURKEY

Every year in Kayseri, Turkey snow festival is held in winter months. Erciyes Mountain which is an inactive volcano is one of the best winter sport resorts.
Statues are made from snow and people take pictures in front of them. People skii and sledge down the mountain.
After skiing down the slopes of Erciyes mountain, people either have barbeque on snow or go to the cafes to eat sausage and bread.
Erciyes mountain is always covered with snow and ice. However, because of global warming, the amount of snow on its caps has started to decrease. In the future we will probably miss the days that we spent on its slopes.

Camel wrestling is an ancient village tradition and tournament in the Aegean Region of Turkey. Camel wrestling has certain rules, and is usually held during winter as a winter festival.
Camel Wrestling is thought that this sport has its origins in the nomadic tribes who depended on camels for their livelihood. It is mostly popular in the Aegean region, where contests are held in the winter months from December to March.

Gingerbread - a hard, dark brown dough made from a mixture of wheat and rye flour, milk, eggs, caramelized sugar, honey, heavily seasoned with spices, mainly cinnamon and ginger, and sometimes also cloves, coriander, cardamom, nutmeg, anise, star anise herb.

Gingerbread cookies are unusual because they have many functions. First of all, they serve as a snack. They were usually eaten after the main meal for dessert. Gingerbread dough does not spoil easily and can be stored for a long time, so it was taken on expeditions, it could be used as bread for a pilgrim or as a biscuit for a knight or soldier.
The Christmas decorations are used to decorate the streets, make them luminous but above all to make the street and the city more attractive and prettier.
I chose this photo because it shows us the waste of electrical energy with non-economical bulbs which could be replaced by led bulbs. This therefore relates to the 7th and 11th SD Goals.

“Dervish” – literally meaning “doorway” – is a common term for an initiate of Sufism who is considered as a bridge between the spiritual and material worlds, while the act of whirling is the climax of the Sema ceremonies. The Mevlevi Sema Ceremony of Turkey is recognised by UNESCO as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The Turkish city of Konya hosts one of the most exquisite ceremonies of spirituality with the mesmerising beauty of the Whirling Dervishes honouring Mevlana, the great Sufi mystic.
Thousands of people gather to commemorate the life and teachings of the 13 century Persian poet and Sufi mystic Rumi – also known as Mevlana (“our master”). The unity of being is the central tenet in the transcendental teachings of this Islamic philosopher who believed that dance and music led to a higher consciousness, which in turn helped to discover divine love. The festival therefore is full of Sufi dance and music ceremonies – called Sema – performed by Mevleni or followers of Rumi.

Our school Christmas interior decoration is made of natural materials like wood, straw, misletoe. We also use energy saving led lights.

Considering that me and my family spend Christmas alone, we try to find alternatives for a traditional dinner with the intentions of being eco-friendly. We often resolve in ordering a set of sushi. By doing so, we are not only supporting a small business, which is important especially during quarantine, but also avoiding throwing away lots of unfinished food, like we would have done if we took part in making 12 separate dishes (what is a tradition, practiced especially within polish families). However, some families might want to stick to the idea of a conventional meal – so what should they do? The answer is really simple. They should make portion sizes that will surely be finished or skip out on making a dish or two. A great solution would be also giving warm meals to less-fortunate people, who can’t afford it. ULa

CHRISTMAS HEADRESS
In Christmas time houses, besides Christmas tree, lights and other ornaments, are also decorated in headdresses.
The natural versions are made of green twigs of conifers in a circle which are the symbol of life and Christ’s Birth and Resurrection. There is also a candle inside of this wreath. The whole ‘construction’ can be decorated with cones, Italian nuts or dried fruits - the most common are oranges.

The very fact that you can create something like this out of natural materials makes it a good thing to sell before Christmas. The collected money can be intended for pre-holiday fundraisings taking care of poor and homeless people.
Even after the holiday season as we start to clean all of the decorations the handmade headdress takes its part in sustainable development. When we clean the headdress made of twigs and cones, we can return them to forest so they will decompose or we can use branches as kindling in wood stove. Nothing will be wasted.

The Christmas Carolers take the Star with them.
The star alludes to the Star of Bethlehem,
that the Three Kings saw.
The photo shows an example of a Star made artificially,
but the star can also be made of straw.

Christmas traditions vary by region. In Poland, we have our traditional elements related to Christmas.
One of them is Christmas Carolers. They are people who go around houses
to sing Christmas carols together, and in Poland it is also a form of nativity play.

One of the other traditions is a Christmas tree at home. I often decorate my Christmas tree with straw decorations or hand-made figurines. Everyone can quickly and easily create his own Christmas decorations. I think that a Christmas tree with such decorations can look really great! It all depends on our ingenuity, things and aesthetics. Monika

Etymology of Boxing day

There are a lot of stories about etymology of “Boxing Day” One of them says that on December 26th the church gave away the boxes to distribute them to wider community and help the poorest. That’s a paradox to our century because on that day we join the masses to purchase plenty of unnecessary goods just because they are cheap. Days like this encourage customers to make quick decisions that they may often regret.

Negative aspects

The fashion industry affects the environment often negatively due to the fact that too much poorly made clothing is being produced, bought and thrown away. Trends are changing fast. More and more people follow consumer lifestyle.

Toys and electronic devices bought by us are often not recycled and pollutes the environment. Moreover, what about the food on sales? Do really people have to buy more food especially after Christmas? Global food waste is another huge problem on this list. Katarzyna

Every year, millions of plastic gift bags are used and end up in the bin. Instead, it is worth investing in manila packaging. It may not be decorated with printed patterns, but even such manila can be decorated with stamps or simply drawings.
We will also pay much less for it, and what is more beneficial for the environment – we can return such manila to waste paper for recycling. I think each of us should take advantage of any opportunities to care for the environment, even for such a small thing that we do not think about every day. Matylda

Burning coal in the furnace

December is this cold time in the year, where the heating period is continuing. Vision of Christmas is usually associated with a Christmas tree, family, presents and warm chimneys. In a few years we are starting to see causes of the burning coal

in the furnaces. In many cities it is forbidden, but people still do it. Burning coal by single-family houses is one of the main reasons of the air-polluting. It's important yo be interested in the subject of the klimat health, because it's all about our common good. Zuzanna
We associate gift paper with happiness and love. No wonder when our gifts are packed in them. The paper is supposed to surprise us. We and our loved ones spend time packing and unpacking, but is it a good tradition?
We forget about tons of glowing, shiny paper, which is useless after unpacking. By purchasing more rolls, we allow to cut down the forests. In addition, the paper is covered with a foil which consists of plastic. Besides, these beautiful colors are not natural, they are printed. The dyes that are used for this are not of natural origin, they are artificial and therefore cannot be recycled.
There is also another option: if we want to achieve the same effect, we can buy ordinary recycled paper and print it with natural paints. We may lose a bit of magic and brilliance but we can gain a better life in the future. Ina

Julia
Many years ago, my father and I made a small nativity scene ourselves, made of natural materials such as wood, straw or reed for the roof. It has been with us for as long as I can remember and it lasts longer than any other decoration we’ve ever had. Daria

Christmas Cleaning
People start the preparation even a few days before the Christmas. In my family a big part of preparation is cleaning. Because of the climate change and carrying about the nature we decided to do some cleaning stuff in the ecological style. There are a lot of methods to help our planet.
First and I think very crucial things is that we must to save some stuff. We use lots of water; we could easily reduce that quantity. Another thing is the paper towel, we use them but it is not really good for environment. Instead, we could use multiple-use towel.

We can prepare some eco cleaning products ourselves, as well. In the internet there are tons of information about it. It's easy and cheap to be made. For example, we can clean up window with vinegar and an old newspaper!
A huge number of detergents have bad and destructive influence on our mother planet. It’s because of chemical and toxic composition of those stuff. In our times we have extreme choice of ecological products. They are composed from natural inggredients and they are non-toxic. We can have dish liquid, window cleaner, carpet cleaner, furniture polish and much more of these. Wiktor

I will be talking about Christmast presents. I want to encourage you to buy things that are hand-made and being sold in small businesses. I think that supporting craftmen is very important, especially now, when we are in pandemic, and those people can’t sell their things on markets. Craftmen are making things they sell by their own hands, and most of them are using the best products.

I would like to focus on one particular shop. It is a Polish soap shop, called 4szpaki, (4Starlings), run by a small group of people that have passion for making cosmetics out of only natural components. You can buy there not only bar soap, but also liquid soap which is sold in glass bottles, shampoo in bar, conditioner in bar, bath bombs, oils and serums, peelings, hydrolates, candles and deodorant. Everything they sell is packed in paper or glass, so it reduces waste. Their products smell beautifully, sometimes it’s hard to remember that it’s not food.

'Bocuk Night' in Edirne
People, wearing costumes, celebrate traditional 'Bocuk Night' in the Camlica Village of Kesan district of Edirne, Turkey on January 18. Bocuk Night, an evening in which locals paint their faces in scary make-up to spook community residents in honor of a family of ghosts, is a medieval tradition in Balkans.
While Bocuk is the word used in Thrace to represent the coldest, longest and harshest night in winter, this ritual is in a sense one aimed at increasing the community's power of resistance against the harsh climate conditions. A ritual affiliated with the Balkan culture that has been passed on from medieval times to today's generation, there are a number of superstitions that are pertinent to the traditions played out on this very special evening

Pumpkin's dessert is served on Bocuk Night.
According to legends surrounding Bocuk Night, if water freezes overnight then nature that year will be bountiful. This superstition is practiced by placing water on a piece of wood and if it is frozen by the morning, then it is believed that the members of the household are sure to have a healthy, resilient and powerful year.
