Hi, my name is Bob. I hear you are interested in learning the steps of a presidential election. Let me take you on an adventure. The first thing to know is there are requirements. Not everyone can just run for president. They must be 35 years old, a natural born citizen, and have lived in the country for at least 14 years.

Thank you for coming to hear me talk today!
In order to begin timing, fundraising, organization, and having a strategy are the most important first steps. My best friend Janet is running for president. She begins when the current president's term is almost over. He is not popular, and she is, so it is good timing. Because she is popular, she gets a lot of money when she holds fundraisers. People come to see her talk, and like her so they give her money which helps her campaign.

Duck and frog, thank you so much for your help.

She has a lot of people who help her organize and strategize for her campaign. It is very important so that it all stays on track, and so she does not have to worry about too much. Since the process is very complicated, and too much just one person to handle.

Let's be friends since we have similar ideas!
Primary elections are the start of the process. Janet meets with others who have similar ideas. She goes around the country to gather supporters when she debates. The candidate with the most supporters in the primaries gets to be the candidate for their side in the final election. It is called a caucus. Janet participates in both open and closed primaries in each state. An open primary is when voters do not have to side yet. A closed primary is when only voters registered with a party can decide who they want to vote. Janet debated and she won, so she will continue on to the final election as the candidate for her party.
