Without a doubt, Henry’s favorite toys were his magnet tiles. When Henry built with the bright tiles, he felt just like his dad building giant offices and apartment buildings downtown. He was so proud of the buildings he put together. Soaring archways of multiple colors that seem to reach up to the sky, high walls that formed multiple rooms like a giant palace, and spired towers taking plain old light from the sun and shining back at him in brilliant colors – Henry loved to build with magnet tiles and all he wanted was for Santa to bring him some more. He dreamed of making smooth roads for his trucks to drive and ramps for them to pull up on to get to the upper floors of his buildings and bring supplies to the people who lived in his castle.
Henry’s mom and dad asked him if there weren’t other things he
might like. They reminded him that Santa had a big toy bag, and Henry had many grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who were anxious to get him gifts. Henry thought about it and said he had enough cars, trucks, balls, and tools. He loved to build with his magnet tiles and wanted to see if he could build bigger and nicer things. Every night when his dad got home Henry heard stories of how he was building huge skyscrapers and big buildings for lots of people to live in. That is what Henry wanted to do with his Christmas presents this year.
It was different for Izzy, who lived next door to Henry. She was his favorite playmate, and she could not make a final Christmas list for Santa. She liked clothes and dolls, coloring books, and stuffed animals. And she was extremely excited. “Henry guess what is happening at my house? “ Henry could not imagine what had her so fired up. “My mom and dad are building a fireplace and a chimney. Santa will be sure to come this year, we’ll have a chimney for him to slide down!” Henry told her the special arrangement they had with Santa so he could come into their house, how his dad had made a special place for Santa to come through the roof and down through the ceiling and put present under their tree. Izzy was certain that would not work at her house, but that was no problem because she would have a chimney and a fireplace of her own by Christmas.
Henry knew that was different, but everything about the year was different. Henry’s mom and dad wore masks nearly every where they went, and Henry and his brother wore them a lot, too. And he missed seeing his grandparents, his Tia, his uncles and aunt as much as he used to because of something called a pandemic. Henry was not quite certain what a pandemic was, but he agreed with the people who wished it were over. He hoped that next year he would not wear a mask until Halloween, and he was tired of washing his hands all the time. He was sure everyone else felt the same. The park across the street was nearly always empty, when he walked his dog with his mom and brother the streets were deserted, and it seemed spooky going to a grocery store and seeing all the people masked. When would it all end?
