I dedicate this story to those who believe in wonders.
In the evening it began to snow. Lights were on in the house, but the main source of illumination was the beautifully decorated Christmas tree, numerous garlands and the old night lamp brought by parents from a trip. Little Ethan was sitting on the windowsill, and while there was a real blizzard outside the window, he drew snowflakes on the glass. Mom and Dad went on a business trip a few days before the New Year celebrations, so all household chores fell on the shoulders of his elder sister.
Emma's voice came from the kitchen. She had just finished making the pie and was now waiting for her restless brother to take his portion before going to watch the New Year's fairy tale on TV. While Ethan was keen on watching the movie, Emma cleaned the kitchen and occasionally came into the living room to get another piece of pastries.
Half an hour passed, and the house became quieter. The old video player went silent, the TV screen was glowing blue. Ethan was sleeping quietly in a chair, wrapped in a blanket. Emma carefully carried her brother into the room on the sofa.
The light was still on in the living room. Emma was sitting in an armchair and enthusiastically reading an old book. For the fifth time she had re-read this story and she would never get tired of reading the lines of her favourite book, reliving this story over and over again. But most of all she remembered the main character of the story. He was as brave as a lion, kind, and courageous, always helped the poor, did not boast of a high position in society and wealth. But behind all this, he remained a lonely young man. Therefore, in order to create the atmosphere of so-called happiness, he often organized balls in his estate on holidays. How Emma wished, at least once, to look at all this splendor with her own eyes, attend at least once such a celebration and spend a boring New Year's Eve not “ at four walls”, but in a noisy hall, in a beautiful ball gown. "How I wish I were there at least once."
She seemed to have stayed too long. Emma put the book aside and got up to unplug the TV. But as soon as she got up, the lights went out in the house. Emma turned off the TV and, to her immense horror, the screen began to glow even stronger than before. A strange crack came from it, and the next thing Emma saw was a flash.
Then she saw an empty room with expensive decorations on the walls, paintings, lamps, huge windows and a cold floor. It took Emma at least a minute to recover, stop paying attention to the headache, and realize that she was not in the living room of her house. It took some time to get up and look around. On the right in the corner, she saw a mirror and decided to look at herself. To say that the reflection shocked her was to say nothing. In the mirror, a girl in a luxurious fluffy dress looked at her; there were the thinnest gloves on both hands as if sewn especially for her.
Suddenly, a middle-aged woman entered the room. She was thrilled by Emma's abrupt disappearance:
- Everyone is just waiting for you.
-What's happening? Is this a joke? I urgently need to go home!
“Miss Emma, but you've just arrived at the ball. You can't leave so quickly. Everyone is concerned about your abrupt loss. But don't worry, I said that you decided to go for a walk in the fresh air and will be back soon. Let me take you to the hall.
“I don’t understand. This is just someone's ridiculous joke. "
Emma's inquiries did not stop there. She learned that this woman was accompanying her to the ball and that everyone was celebrating the New Year at Lucas' estate today.
-Have I heard right? You said Lucas’ estate?
- Yes that's right.
During this conversation, Emma did not notice how they reached the huge door. The woman repeated once again that everyone was only waiting for Emma and pushed her to the door.
Festively dressed men and women stood around the perimeter of the huge hall. Someone stood aside and conducted small talk; someone admired the abundance of dishes at today's dinner. But as soon as Emma came in, the music started playing and everyone began spinning in a waltz. Time flew by noticelessly, for the first time in her life she smiled so much, for this seemingly short evening she was able to fulfill her dream, moreover, she even managed to dance with Lucas. After midnight, when the clock struck twelve, the general amusement intensified.
Emma even managed to forget that at the very beginning she asked to go home and wanted to leave this estate as soon as possible.
Dawn was approaching, she would really like to stay here forever, but she knew perfectly well that she had to go home. The holiday atmosphere that had been flying around had evaporated. At parting, Lucas gave her a wonderful brooch in the shape of a flower. The first rays of the sun began to illuminate the room.
For the first time, Emma didn't want to wake up so badly, but the insistent sound of her alarm clock clearly disturbed her. She turned off the alarm and looked around. It was still the same living room, the luminous tree, and the book on the floor.
She got up from the armchair to put the book on the table. Ethan ran into the living room, happily waving his hands and wishing his sister a happy new year.
On the table next to the book lay a wonderful brooch in the shape of a flower.
