One day, Bubbles the fish swam to the sea shore using automatic processing, because Bubbles remembers where it is without having to think about it.
Bubbles was looking for seaweed to bring home to his family. Bubbles does this with visual encoding, because he recognizes seaweed by what it looks like.

Yes!
On his way home, Bubbles sees a fellow fish he lives by and asks him if there are any short cuts home. The fish responds, "Yes."
After giving Bubbles a long list of instructions for his shortened journey home, he tries to remember it using effortful processing.

The fish then adds, "If you get lost, call me. My number is 5468712204."
Bubbles knows that remembering the phone number will be more complicated than using the instructions, but he tries to memorize the digits anyway. Using a semantic encoding process called "Chunking", Bubbles separates the number into smaller parts: 546-871-2204

Bubbles starts his journey home, using his explicit memory to try and remember what the Blue Fish said.
Bubbles recalls that he was told to go to the surface so that he could see over his town easier.
Meanwhile, Bubbles unconsciously hums a song

Due to short term memory, Bubbles forgets what to do next. Luckily, his chunking was successful, so he called the Blue Fish again.
The Blue Fish reminds Bubbles to swim South East until he reaches the big cave at the bottom of the sea. Because of relearning, Bubbles remembers his instructions more clearly the second time.

Upon arriving at the cave, Bubbles runs into a scary shark.
"Give me that seaweed," the shark demanded.
"No," Bubbles responded, "It's for my family."
"What if I can offer you an even shorter way home?"
Bubbles was interested in what the shark had to offer.
