Gabriel García Márquez was born on March 6th, 1927 in Aracataca, Columbia. his grandparents influenced his early development more so than his actual parents. His grandfather, "Papalelo" was an excellent storyteller. He taught Gabriel lessons from the dictionary and took him to the circus every year. Gabriel's grandmother, Doña Tranquilina Iguarán was in touch with the spiritual world and also contained the traits of a unique storyteller.

In school gabriel earned the reputation of being a timid boy. he spent a lot of his time writing humorous poems and comic strips. he published his first poem in a high school magazine called Juventud. upon graduation in 1947, he studied law in Bogotá. however, he spent almost all of his free time reading fiction. gabriel was fascinated by the idea of writing. not traditional literature, but a style similar to the stories his grandmother shared with him.

as time passed, gabriel's desire to be a writer only grew. he published his first work, "La tercera resignación," that appeared in the September 13th 1947 edition of the newspaper El Espectador. his true passion was writing but in university he continued with law to please his father.

gabriel's professional career began as a journalist. while continuing to study law at the National University of Colombia, he wrote for El Universal in Cartagena for two years. then, he was the writer to a whimsical column under the name of "Septimus" for a local paper called El Heraldo. During this time he became an active member of an informal group of writers and journalists known as the Barranquilla Group. this association provided a large amount of motivation and inspiration for gabriel's aspiring literary career. furthermore, gabriel spent some of his time as a film critic.

Since the age of 18, gabriel wished to write a novel based on his grandparents' house where he grew up. this novel became known as One Hundred Years of Solitude and was his rise to fame. This story was widely popular and led to his Nobel Prize as well as the Rómulo Gallegos Prize.

Magic realism coordinates the existence of fantastic elements in the real world. With magic realism, writers do not invent new worlds, they reveal the magical in the existing world. Magic realism was nearly invented by Gabriel García Márquez when he published One Hundred Years of Solitude. gabriel said he wrote magical realism because that’s just how life was in Latin America.
