Mali wakes up one bright Monday morning to start her day. As soon as she wakes up, she reaches over to turn off her alarm.

Her quick motion to turn off the alarm is known as, Automatic Processing. This is when you do something without thinking twice about it!

Mali picks up her phone and plays music while she is getting ready for school. Suddenly, a song she has never heard before begins to play.

She listens to the song's lyrics and really likes them! This is called Acoustic Encoding. Mali is listening and understanding the sound.

Mali walks into the kitchen for breakfast before she leaves for school. Her mom hands her an apple to go with her lunch. It's her favorite!
Good morning sweetie! You look ravishing today!

What does ravishing mean?
Ravishing means that you look delightful!
Mali grabs the apple as she wonders what that word means.
On the way to school, Mali rides her bike. She is able to do this by using Implicit Memory. This is when you can do an activity by using your past experience!

Mali walks into the class room but accidentally calls her teacher the name of her past teacher! This is called Proactive Interference.
She is having trouble remembering the new teachers name but knows the older teacher's name.
Hello Mrs. Clarke!
No Mali, I'm Mrs. Chen

Mali sits behind her desk and prepares for her test. Last time she had a test, Mali didn't do so well. She doesn't like to think about it. This is called Repression.

Before the test, Mali studies over all her notes just in case she forgets something. This is called Relearning. Mali is remembering everything she forgot!

When Mali learned this information the first time, it was known as Effortful Processing. She had to study everything she learned, nothing was learned automatically.

It is now time for the test to begin! Mali reads question #1.
1. What is the name of the item below?

Mali looks at the picture on the test. She remembers that this is a telescope. The ability to identify images is called Visual Encoding.
Mali moves on to question #2. Its a math problem she learned from last year! She is able to do this problem easily. This is called Recall. Mali remembers what she learned from long ago.
2. What is 5(2+2)
Mali is now on the final question of her quiz. She looks down at question #3.
3. What does "Ravishing" mean?
Mali looks at the word and understand its meaning. This is known as Semantic Encoding.
