Luca was a zebra who lived in Burundi in The Great Rift Valley. 

He loved to race the other zebras.

He loved to play with the other zebras in the water.

He loved to run and run until he couldn’t run anymore.

Luca was a very happy zebra.

One day, Luca’s friend Maya and her whole family moved all of a sudden. Luca watched them leave Burundi just as the sun was setting.

“Where are you going?” he called.

“I don’t know” she replied. 

Luca ran as fast as his legs could carry him to try and catch up with Maya and her family.

“But when will I see you again?” He asked, worried that he wouldn’t see his friend for a very long time. 

“When it is safe for us to return” she replied, sadly. 

Maya turned away from Luca and joined her family.

That night, Luca didn’t sleep a wink. He thought and thought about what Maya had said.

Luca asked himself:  

“Why did she say she’ll be back when it is safe?”

“What does she mean?”

“Our home is safe... isn’t it?” “Will I have to move too?”
