Ethiopian wolves are slender and long-legged with a distinctive red-tinged coat and bushy tail. Though Ethiopian wolves are similar to dogs and cayotes, they have a narrow muzzle and small teeth. This helps to handle the smaller animals that they stalk in their habitat. They usually hunt alone but come together to take down larger prey.

These wolves usually hunt for animals smaller than themselves. Their diet consists mainly of the giant mole rats and common grass rats that are common to their habitat. Sometimes they will hunt as a group to bring down young antelopes, lambs, and hares.

Ethiopian wolves have extended families of about 18. The adults work together to care for their pups.

The wolves like to wander around valley meadows and short grasslands because smaller animals are plentiful. They are found in the higher mountains of Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian Wolf is one of the rarest and most endangered of all canids. Current studies are being done to find out how many actually are existing and what can be done to save them.
