This book is lovingly dedicated to my grandson, Kyle Jameson, who is always kind.
One of my favorite people, Fred Rogers of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood once wrote:
“There are three ways to ultimate success.
The first way is to be kind.
The second way is to be kind.
The third way is to be kind.”
Kyle loves to play baseball. He doesn’t just “kind of” love it. He absolutely loves it. Is it any wonder that when Saturday came, he was up early with his uniform on ready to play. The game started at 9:00. He had plenty of time to eat his favorite breakfast of Mickey Mouse pancakes before leaving for the game.
At the ballpark, Kyle was helping his dad unload the car when he noticed his friend Carson and his mother were struggling to get their things out of the car.
“Dad, can I go help Carson?”said Kyle.
“Sure,” said his dad.
Kyle rushed over to Carson’s car. “Can I help you? “ asked Kyle.
“That would be so Kind of you.” Replied Carson’s mom.
After they finished unloading the car, they walked to the baseball field together. Both boys were excited about playing as they ran into the dugout
“Kyle, we are playing the Angel’s today. I want you to play first base,” said the coach.
“Oh, great!” shouted Kyle as he put on the first baseman’s glove and ran out to first base for fielding practice.
By the last inning, Kyle’s team had scored three runs and the Angel’s had scored two runs. There was only one out and bases were loaded when the Angel’s best hitter came to the plate. Kyle took a ready stance just to the right of first base as the batter stepped up to the plate. Kyle remembered that he was a good hitter. He wanted to be sure to be ready if the ball came his way.
The batter took a big swing and popped the ball up just behind the first baseline. Kyle took several steps back and caught the ball. Then he turned and made a perfect throw to third base in time for the third baseman to tag the runner out.
Everyone on the team came running up to Kyle to give him high fives. The coach ran out and shouted,”Kyle, that was a one of a kind play! You were terrific.”
At dinner that night, the whole family was talking about the game when Kyle interrupted with a question.
“At the game, two people used the word kind but it seemed to be in two different ways. How many meanings of kind are there?”
“Let’s use Google to find a definition,” replied Kyle’s mom. “Trevor, why don’t you look it up and tell us what you find.”
“It says, #1) helpful or friendly as a kind person; #2) a person or thing that is not like the other, as in one of a kind; #3) sort of or somewhat, as in, he kind of likes apples.
Kyle thought for a minute about # 1. He had always been kind. He was kind to his family. He was kind to his friends and he was especially kind to his dog Percy. But Kyle wanted to do more.
“What can I do to make the world a kinder place?”he asked.
“Why don’t we brainstorm some ideas about what it means to be kind first”, said his dad. “What words come to mind when you think of being kind?”
It didn’t take long for them to come up with a list of words. Here are the words they thought of:
Friendly - welcoming a new person.
Generous - sharing something of yours with someone else.
Gentle - treating people and animals in a calm way.
Affectionate - showing your feelings (like hugging).
Thoughtful - saying something nice or doing something nice for someone.
Considerate - thinking of others feeling.
Helpful - doing a good deed for someone else.
“Now that we know some of the ways we can all be kind what should we do next?”asked Kyle.
“You might start by doing one kind thing every day,” said his mom.
“Does it have to be something big?” Kyle replied.
“It could be something small or something big,”said his dad. “Random acts of kindness can be simple things like smiling at someone at your school or sharing a ball with a classmate. In fact, there is even a Random Acts of Kindness Day on February 17th.
Kyle had an idea! He would focus on one kind word every day!
On Monday, Kyle focused on being friendly. He smiled and waved and said hello to people he passed at school. At lunch he asked a new person from his class to play basketball with him.
On Tuesday, he decided to think of ways to be generous. He started out by sharing his favorite toy with his brother Trevor. That evening he asked if he could give some of his toys to a homeless shelter.
On Wednesday, he worked on being thoughtful. He held the door open for his mom as she was leaving for school. That evening he wrote a letter to Pop Pop ands Grandma Anita to tell them what he had been doing and to tell them he missed seeing them.
On Thursday, he concentrated on being gentle, which was super easy. He loved his dog Percy and he liked to just sit and pet him.
On Friday, he zeroed in on being affectionate - not the slobbery kisses kind but the great big bear hug kind. When his mom came to pick him up at school, he gave her the biggest bear hug ever.
