Once upon a time, in a village called Kampung Indah there lived a girl named Bawang Putih.
One day, Bawang Putih's mother had passed away. Now, she lived with her stepmother. She had a stepsister called Bawang Merah.
Bawang Putih's stepmother, Mak Kundur, disliked her. She was always scolded by her stepmother. Mak Kundur only loved her daughter, Bawang Merah.

Years after, Bawang Putih grew up to be a very beautiful young lady.
Bawang Merah, who was not beautiful, was jealous of her stepsister.
Mak Kundur was also jealous of her. She always bullied Bawang Putih by asking her to do heavy chores. Poor Bawang Putih.
Bawang Putih felt very sad. She went to a well and cried. "Ibu, Putih miss Ibu so much", wailed Bawang Putih while thinking of her mother. She missed her so much.

Suddenly, a fish appeared on the surface of the water. "Don't cry. I shall be your friend," said the fish. Bawang Putih felt glad to have a new friend. She called the fish, Si Kaloi.

When Bawang Putih's mother was alive, she always fed Si Kaloi. Therefore, Si Kaloi wanted to repay her kindness by being Bawang Putih's friend.

Bawang Putih was not sad anymore. She confided her feelings to Si Kaloi. Unfortunately, Mak Kundur saw what she was doing.

One day, Mak Kundur asked Bawang Merah to catch Si Kaloi. Then she used it to cook fish curry. Bawang Putih did not know what had happened.

One night, Bawang Putih had a dream. Her mother told her to bury the bones of the fish at the back of their house.
