Washing of girls


Lamb-Tails
Bahniatka
- Lamb-Tails were used to fan ill people to get them healthy quicker
- Lamb-Tails were sanctified in churches to protect people against storms
- In different regions of Slovakia were Lamb-tails used for different reasons
- in Orava region they used to put them into furrows for better crop
- in Eastern Slovakia they used to put them next to the first planted potato
- in Horehronie region they used them to drive the cattle out

Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday
- Men and women used to wash in a brook
- Women used to believe that they will have beautiful face and hair
- They were singing:
"Vodička čistučká, Kristova matička,
omývaš brehy, korene, omývaj i mňa,
biedne, hriešne stvorenie"
Easter Monday
- The biggest celebration for young boys
- Pouring cold water on girls was a sign of a healthy life
- In some regions of Slovakia was whipping girls part of the tradition
- They used to say this wish:
"Šibi, ryby, mastné ryby, kus koláča od korbáča.
Kázal kadlec aj kadlečka, aby dali tri vajíčka.
Jedno biele, druhé čierne, a to tretie zafarbené,
to je moje potešenie.
Aj kus baby, aby boli naši radi."
