In the city of Verona, there were two families,
Capulet and Montague who did not get along and
were always quarrelling with each other. The
Price declares that the next person who disturbs
the peace will punished with death.
The Capulet family decides to through a
masquerade party. Romeo, the son of
Montague, hears of the party and decides to
show up in disguise. Romeo goes to the party
hoping to catch site of the girl he loves,
Rosaline, but, instead, he meets Juliet and falls
passionately in love with her.
After the party, Romeo sneaks into the
garden below Juliet’s window and hears her
declaring her love for him. Romeo then
climbs up to the balcony and converses
with Juliet for the remainder of the night,
all the while fall more deeply in love with
her.
The lovers arrange to meet the next day
at the cell of Friar Lawrence and secretly
be married by him.
Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, had recognized Romeo
at the party and was angry that a Montague
would dare to be present at a Capulet party.
Tyblat’s anger comes out in a quarrel with
Romeo’s friend Mercutio. Mercutio is killed when
Romeo steps in to break up the quarrel. Romeo
is angry at the death of his friend and kills Tybalt.
Romeo is then banished from the city. Romeo
goes to Friar Lawrence for help. The Friar arranges
for Romeo to secretly spend the night with Juliet
and then flee to safety in the neighbouring city of
Mantua.
Amid the Capulet family’s sorrow at
the death of Tyblat, Paris requests Juliet’s
hand in marriage. Capulet and his wife
are delighted at the proposal. Juliet,
however, refuses but to no avail. Juliet’s
parents plan to force her into the
marriage, unaware that their daughter is
already married to Romeo.
Juliet is quite distraught over her predicament. She goes to
Friar Lawrence for assistance. The good Friar gives her a
potion that will put her into a state that will give her the
appearance of being dead. Juliet will be buried and then
Romeo could come, fetch her from the tomb, and take her
away.
The next day, when it is time to fetch Juliet for her wedding,
the wedding party thinks she is dead. In the mean time,
Friar Lawrence has sent a messenger to Romeo telling him
of the plan and to come fetch the sleeping Juliet from the
tomb. However, the message does not reach Romeo and
bad news travels fast. Romeo hears that Juliet is dead. He is
mortified. Romeo buys a vial of poison, intending to poison
himself at Juliet’s tomb.
Upon reaching Juliet’s tomb, Romeo is surprised
by Paris. A fight breaks out in which Paris is killed.
Romeo then drinks his poison and dies at Juliet’s
side….just as she wakes from her deep sleep. When
Juliet learns what has happened to Romeo she
becomes frantic with sorrow. She refuses to leave
Romeo’s side. She stabs herself to death so that
she would not have to be separated from Romeo.
The deaths of Romeo and Juliet cause reconciliation
between the Capulet and the Montague families.
The families decide to erect a monument in the
memory of Romeo and Juliet as a reminder of what
their anger had done.
