Theodor Seuss Geisel ist 1904 in Springfield geboren. He was born to a
brew master, Theodor Robert, and his wife Henrietta Seuss Geisel. His
grandparents had come from Germany, and owned a brewery. He recalls
that his mother often put her children to sleep with rhymes from her
youth, and credits her with his ability to create rhymes he is so well known
for.

The Geisel family ran a successful brewery, and had successful lives.
However, the onset of WWI and Prohibition presented both financial and
social challenges for the German immigrants. They prospered, however,
and managed to provide Ted and his sister Marnie with happy childhoods.

Geisel left Springfield as a teen to attend Dartmouth college, where he
became an editor-in-chief of "Jack-O-Lantern," Dartmouth’s humor
magazine.
One day, he was caught throwing a drinking party even though alcohol was
illegal with Prohibition. He was no longer editor-in-chief of the magazine.
He continued to contribute, however, and signed his work “Seuss.” This is
the first record of the pseudonym, his middle name and his mother’s
maiden name.

Geisel went to oxford in England after graduation to please his father, but
decided to tour Europe instead. While touring Europe, he met his first wife,
Helen Palmer, in oxford. She also became a children’s book author and
editor.
After returning to the US, he decided to start his career as cartoonist. The
"Saturday Evening Post" and other publications published his first pieces,
but the bulk of his career was devoted to creating ad campaigns for
Standard Oil, which he did for more than 15 years.

As WWII approached, Geisel began contributing weekly political cartoons to
the PM magazine. Too old for the draft, but wanting to contribute to the
war, he served with Frank Capra’s Signal Corps making training movies. It
was here he was first introduced to the art of animation.

Getting Dr. Seuss's first book published took a great degree of persistence.
It was rejected 27 times before being published by Vanguard press. "And to
Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" is somewhat different than other
books written by Dr. Seuss.

Dr. Seuss related some of his books to his own life. For example, drawings
of Horton the Elephant along streams in the Jungle of Nool mirror the
watercourses in Springfield’s Forest Park. Also, the truck driven by
Sylvester McMonkey McBean in "The Sneetches" could be the Knox family
tractor that Ted often saw on the streets of Springfield as a kid. His first
book, "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street," also relates to
Springfield during the time.
