There are 8 moon phases during its 

revolution around Earth.

 The phases are New Moon, Waxing 

Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, 

Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third/Last 

Quarter, Waning Crescent.

New Moon: 

The New Moon is the first phase. Its 

position is directly between the 

Earth and Sun. 

Waxing Crescent:

The Waxing Crescent is the second 

phase. This phase is half way 

between New moon and First 

Quarter.

First Quarter:

The First Quarter or "half moon" is 

the third moon phase. This is when 

the Moon in 90 degrees between 

Earth and Sun.

Waxing Gibbous:

The waxing gibbous is the fourth 

moon phase. A Waxing Gibbous is 

where the Moon is less than half 

illuminated.

Full Moon:

The Full Moon is the fifth phase. A 

Full Moon is where the Earth, 

Moon, and Sun are in alignment but 

the Moon is on the opposite side of 

Earth.

Waning Gibbous: 

The Waning Gibbous is the sixth 

phase. This is where it is also 

is less than half illuminated but it is 

decreasing illumination.
