my adventure in the Digestive System! It has been the craziest
experience of my life!!
During my story their will be words or combining forms
(like this/o) to help teach you a cool thing called
medical terminology. I learned these terms during my adventure
and want to share them with you.
Are you ready for a good story? Here we go! :)

the first organ of this system. This has to be the most
nerve-wracking experience any watermelon could go through!!!
While I was in there, I passed by the gums (gingi/o, gingiv/o)
lips (cheil/o, labi/o), chomped by teeth (denti/o), AND swallowed
by a tongue (lingu/o, gloss/o)! When this was happening, I was
pretty scared, but now I know the mouth is needed to chew
and break down food so it is easier to digest!

or extra organs. The first one is right
next to the mouth, and they are called the
salivary (sial/o) glands. These guys are
here to use their saliva and starches (amyl/o)
to make food moist and help it go down the
throat, or the pharynx.

is the pharynx (pharyng/o). The pharynx's
main job is to connect the mouth to the
esophagus (esophag/o). The esophagus is
this crazy tube that is like a slide!! It
brings food down with its muscles into a
huge pit called the stomach!!

after going through the esophagus. It is
in your abdomen (abdomin/o, celi/o,
lapar/o), which is pretty much your gut!
The stomach churns up all the fats (lip/o,
steat/o) and sugars (gluc/o, glyc/o) that were
brought from the throat.

6

(hepat/o). The liver is another extra organ. It makes
this really neat stuff called bile (bil/o, bilirubin/o)!
It helps break down all the nutrients and helps the
body out big time. It's connected to the gallbladder
(chol/e, chol/o). It's a small little green sac, and the only
thing it really does it store the bile! If the gallbladder isn't
happy, then it will need to be removed. :(That is called a
cholecystectomy!
