Every day I would wake up early in the morning, take a hot shower, get dressed, and ride the bus to school. I was in 8th grade, and all day I would be exhausted. I had to sit through never-ending lectures about pointless math strategies and how people from 4 bc moved around ancient Egypt. Yeah, I got to talk to friends, but it was over a soggy meal during a 30 minute lunch time.
Even though I felt this way, I still tried in school. I always submitted my assignments on time, or at least I tried to, and I always did the work to the best of my ability. Good thing I did, because these choices would play a key part in my future.
Four months before the end of the school year, everyone in 8th grade attended assemblies about the different high schools in the area. A representative came from each school and explained what they had to offer.
"Who cares" I said to my friends.
"Yeah, we'll just go to the school we are assigned to, go through four more years of this torture, and graduate," said my friend Dylan. Some kid that I never met overheard our conversation and explained,
"Well our high school choice will determine our future." We brushed him off, and kept complaining.
After a few minutes, I started thinking about what that kid had said. I kept paying more attention to the presenters, especially when one representative got on the stage. She came up to tell us about a "technical school". She started explaining what a technical school is.
"A technical school is just like your normal high school, but you get to learn a certain job along with your curriculum" This caught my attention. I did not know what I was going to do when I got out of high school, but I did know I was not going to work at a job like McDonald's.
The more the teacher explained this technical school, the more I wanted to go. My friends did not have the same response however.
"Who wants to be a plumber?" Said Nathan.
"They offer other classes," I told him.
"Yeah, I don't really care," He responded,"Besides, my dad has a job at his restaurant, I don't need to worry about that."
"Not everyone has a guaranteed job," Logan said in an annoyed tone. After the assembly, I thought about the benefits of a technical school. Firstly, you get hands-on experience. This gives you experience in the field you want to work in.
Also, If you have no idea where you want to work, like me, then you can explore different careers and decide after you have some experience in a couple different paths. Lastly, technical high schools provide an alternative to college. Most people have the idea cemented in their brain that they must go to college to make money. This is simply wrong. With a few years of experience, you can make well over $100k a year.
Now that I understood the benefits of a Technical high school, I needed to decide if that was the right school. My initial impressions were that this is school for me, but I did not want to make a decision I would regret later. I first needed to decide what field of work that I am most interested in. I thought about the options that the technical school offered, and a few caught my eye. Eletrical, IT, and Auto Tech. I thought about what I was interested in, and what classes the school offered, and I came up with one main carreer path, auto tech. I had been interested in cars since I was born. I've always wanted to learn how the different parts of a vehicle work together to make it function.
Now that I have figured out the carreer path I wanted to work in, I need to decide where I want to attend to learn the skill. There were 3 options presented to me. First, I could attend the high school that I would normally go to, and then go to college for 4 years. Secondly, I could attend the high school I would normally go to, go to a technical college and learn auto tech. Lastly, I could attend a technical high school and learn auto tech along with normal curriculum.
