Hi! My name is Alison and I'm here to help you learn what tsunami's are!
Tsunami's are GIANT waves that can cause a lot of damage.

Underwater earthquakes or volcanic eruptions are what can cause tsunamis!

BOTH CAUSE TSUNAMIS

Tsunami's can happen in many different places around the world but mostly happen in the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean.
The largest tsunami we know of occurred in 1958 in Lituya Bay, Alaska, where an earthquake produced a landslide on one side of the bay. The sudden slump of falling rock sloshed the water up the other side over 1700 FEET!!
Pacific Ocean
Mediterranean Sea
Caribbean Sea

The deadliest tsunami was The Boxing Day Tsunami. It started near the beaches of Thailand and Indonesia in the Indian Ocean and covered buildings and houses. The waves traveled across the entire Indian Ocean, including India and even South Africa!
Atlantic
Ocean
Indian Ocean
Pacific Ocean
Southern Ocean

Underwater earthquakes or volcanoes can't be seen before they happen but they help find out when the tsunami will get to land.

Scientists can estimate when a tsunami is coming after the earthquake by checking the energy released and the depth and level of the ocean in the area the earthquake happened.
