"Do you think he's nervous?" Mom said to Dad.

"Probably, most kids are before their first day of school."

"I just hope his new teacher can help him. I don't want to have to move him to a new school again," Mom said as John was sleeping peacefully.

"Have a good day, John!" Mom yelled from the porch. Dad was driving John to school so he could meet his teacher. John didn't say anything or look back at his mom. John sometimes has a hard time talking to people unless he is asked a question.

"Good morning, John," said Mr. Gordan. John didn't say anything. "He is very shy," said Dad. "I understand. Now John, go ahead and take a seat over there by the table." John didn't move. Dad leaned down to John, "come on, I'll walk you to your desk."

The next day, Mr. Gordan called John's parents in for a meeting. He explained to them that he noticed John had a hard time completing tasks without being asked many times, or shown exactly what to do. "We know, we've been trying to find a school that will help John succeed but we're having a hard time. Can you help us, Mr. Gordan?"

"Absolutely, John is a wonderful student. He just may need some extra support and resources. There are a few things you should know about John's rights as a student and the services schools are required to provide for him." Mom and Dad were feeling hopeful for the first time in a long time.
