To all of the teachers at EWG that have helped me work hard and become successful.

Hi! I'm Bentley and today I really do not want to go to school. I always love school but yesterday made me upset.

See, my family is a little bit different than my other friends' families. They all have computers, nice shoes, and all of the school supplies that anyone could ever need! But my family is different.

I don't have all of the nice things that other kids have. My shoes are dirty, I don't have my own computer, and my family has to work a lot to help us buy everything that we need.

Yesterday, my teacher told us to bring in our rain jackets because we were going to be playing outside at recess and it was going to rain a little. The problem is, I have never owned a rain jacket.

When I woke up this morning, I told my mom that I had a belly ache. My mom told me, “Benny, you will be just fine. I am sure that you are just a little bit tired but once you get to school you will feel so much better!" I kissed my mom goodbye and ran out to the school bus… without any rain jacket.

When I got on the bus I was scared that Max, my best friend, would ask where my rain jacket was. But he never said anything and we just talked about how excited we were to play soccer at recess. Max and I always had the best team.

When Max and I got to school, we said good morning to our teacher, Mrs. Collins. She was always super happy to see everyone in the morning and she always made learning so much fun for all of us.

Good morning!

Hi boys!
After everyone got to school, we did the normal things we do everyday. We started off with math and then we all read the new book of the week, Frindle by Andrew Clements. This book was so good that I lost track of time.

Before I knew it, it was already lunch time. I went and sat with Max and a few other friends at our table and I ate the peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a pear that my mom had made me. She even wrapped it in a paper bag and left me a note that said “Have a great day sweetie! Love mom.”

When we all finished eating lunch, it was time to go outside for recess. I was super scared that everyone would make fun of me because I did not have a rain jacket.

Recess Time!
After Mrs. Collins told everyone to put on their rain jackets, Max and I began to walk outside. Before we reached the door, Mrs Collins pulled me aside and asked where my jacket was. I didn't want to lie to her so I told her that I've never had one.

Where is your rain jacket Bentley?

I've never had one before.
