Numerator
Denominator
Fractions have a Numerator and a Denominator. The Numerator is the number on top, representing parts of a whole. The Denominator is the number on bottom, representing the whole amount.
Think of it like a pie - if I have a pie with 5 slices, and only 3 are left, what would the fraction of slices left be?
5 is the total number of slices, so it will be on the bottom of your fraction.
3 is the number of slices left out of 5, so it will be on the top of your fraction.
What if you have a fraction like ?
The fraction will simplify because you can divide both the Numerator and Denominator by the same number.
Both 2 and 6 can be divided by 2 to make the fraction .
