It was a boring day, and the students were quiet. The clouds hid the sun away and Mr. Lee, their teacher, was going on about a lesson on health.
“Mr. Lee, why is candy bad for you?” asked Wyatt.
Mr. Lee looked at the ground, like he was trying to remember something. Then, he looked up in excitement.
“I wanna show you guys something," he said.
He made his way to his desk, and opened a drawer full of papers and sticky-notes. He shuffled his hands around for a while, until he pulled out something shiny and metallic.
“Ah ha!” he said.
He shut the drawer and walked to the front of the class. He held something that looked like a magnifying glass, but the glass part was black, with a glowing red dot in the very center.
“Scooch closer, you're gonna like this,” he announced.
All of the students grew curious and got up out of their seats, piling up and shoving each other. Everyone stood around Mr. Lee, and gazed at the magnifying glass with interest.
“What is it?” asked Maya.
“It’s an X-ray Glass Mark II,” answered Mr. Lee. “There are only two in existence, and I want to show you how it works,”
Mr. Lee studied the device, trying to turn it on, and then the blank screen turned on. The device acted as a normal magnifying glass now, because you could see through it. Everybody watched, and shuffled around to get closer.
“Where did you get it?” asked a student.
“I got it from a good friend,” said Mr. Lee. “Now, go back to your seats please, except for you, Wyatt. You will be my volunteer,”
Wyatt stood awkwardly facing everyone, as Mr. Lee was turning on the projector.
“Alrighty, Wyatt, would you please hold out your hand,” instructed Mr. Lee.
Wyatt did so, and Mr. Lee held the X-ray Glass over Wyatt’s hand.
On the projector, a lot of blue and blurry lines were floating around, and looked like a camera trying to focus. Then, the students gasped, staring at the projection. The image had finally focused completely, and Wyatt’s hand was there, except there was something extraordinary. The bones in the hand were visible, just like an X-ray. Everyone was amazed, and the room was full of rumbling chatter.
“Cool, right?” said Mr. Lee.
Wyatt stared at the projection in awe. Mr. Lee then turned a knob on the device, and held it back over Wyatt’s hand. Now, instead of bones, you could see the veins and blood in his hand.
The class was out of control, to which Mr. Lee shouted, “All right, that's enough! Settle down please!”
“Can you try it on me?” shouted Kate.
“Maybe tomorrow, we still have to finish the lesson,” replied Mr. Lee.
The class groaned in disappointment as Mr. Lee put the X-ray Glass back into the drawer.
The school day ended and everyone was going to their buses. The school itself was very quiet, with empty rooms and silence, and the only thing you could hear was Mr. Lee’s echoing footsteps in the deserted hallways. Click Clack Click Clack. After the buses drove off, Mr. Lee walked back to his classroom. The room was also empty, but as he was grabbing his car keys, he noticed his paper drawer was open. Without a thought, he shut the drawer and turned off the lights, closing the door behind him.
On the bus, Wyatt had a look of mischief.
“Hey,” said Wyatt
Tony, (Wyatt’s best friend) jerked his head away from the window.
“Yeah?” he whispered.
“I wanna show you something cool,”
Wyatt began to unzip his backpack, and stuck his hand into it. Tony’s eyes went wide. Wyatt pulled out Mr. Lee’s X-ray Glass, and held it with two hands.
“How did you get that? You’re gonna be in so much trouble.”
“Calm down, I’ll put it back tomorrow. I just want to try it when I get home,” whispered Wyatt.
Wyatt put it back in his backpack and the two of them were silent for the rest of the bus ride.
The next day, the kids waited in their seats for the teacher to walk in the classroom. Wyatt sat patiently and quietly, waiting for the best time to return the X-ray Glass. The teacher then entered the classroom, and looked like he does every day. He walked up to the front of the class and said, “Okay, please take out your health notebooks and we’ll continue our lesson from yesterday.
He doesn’t know, thought Wyatt.
“Mr. Lee, can you use the X-ray thingy again?” asked Kate.
Mr. Lee chuckled, and said, “I was expecting someone to ask. Sure, I’ll get it out but only for a minute,"
Everyone cheered except for Wyatt. He was scowling at Kate. Mr. Lee opened the drawer and reached inside. He moved all of the miscellaneous papers and letters around, and raised an eyebrow.
“Can you not find it?” asked Kate.
“It's not in here. I don’t know where it could have gone. I put it in the drawer yesterday, you all saw me do it,”
Mr. Lee remembered that the drawer was opened last night.
“Do any of you see it? No? Okay, well if you see it just let me know," said Mr. Lee
Tony, looked back at Wyatt, with a look of your in so much trouble. Wyatt though about telling Mr. Lee what he had done, but the fear was too overwhelming. He kept his mouth shut and waited until the perfect moment to sneak the X-ray Glass back into the drawer.
“Okay…well I guess we can’t use it today but maybe if I find it. For now, lets just do our regular lesson," said Mr. Lee
The class groaned in disappointment, but Wyatt let out a sigh of relief.
Wyatt took his notebook out of his backpack with great delicacy, trying not to reveal the X-ray glass. All day, Wyatt felt like the only thing on his mind was that thing in his backpack. His body tingled and his hands were warm with sweat.
