Once upon a time in the land of Bikini Bottom, there
was a rock named Rocky the Rock. However, Rocky
the Rock was a rock of many identities...

Sometimes, Rocky the Rock was an igneous
rock. Igneous rocks are formed from the
cooling of magma, which is hot liquid rock
found deep inside the earth. Also, igneous
rocks can be formed inside the earth
(intrusive igneous rock) or outside the earth
(extrusive igneous rock) as a result of a
volcanic eruption.

When Rocky the Rock was an igneous rock,
ALL the lady rocks were infatuated with his
looks, since igneous rocks are very shiny and
glasslike.

After being an igneous rock, Rocky the
Rock could become either sedimentary
rock or metamorphic rock, or even melt
back to magma and turn back into
igneous once more. All of this is possible
because of the Rock Cycle!

If Rocky the Rock wanted to turn into
sedimentary rock, he must first be broken
down into sediment (loose pieces of rock and
mineral) through weathering and erosion,
which occurs through rain and wind over a
long period of time.

After enough sediment is piled and
compacted together, Rocky the Rock is
officially a sedimentary rock!

Since the process takes an awfully long
time, fossils can sometimes be formed
within the sedimentary rock if the
material slips in during the piling and
compacting of sediment! Cool stuff
right?!
