Hi! I am Ibn Battuta & today I am going to tell you about some of my story.
During the Tughlaq rule in Afghanistan, when Muhammad Tughlaq was the sultan, things were going really well. That was when I came to Afghanistan. I was born in morocco in a family that produced judges and I was an Islamic traveller. My first travel was at the age of 21 for hajj (pilgrimage) in Makkah. At first my purpose was to fulfil that religious duty and to broaden my education by studying under famous scholars in Egypt, Syria, and the Hejaz. I was trained as Qazi and I judged in many places including Delhi in the court of Muhammad Tughlaq.
My greatest achievement was my book. After I returned to Fez in 1354, the Sultan of Morocco listened to my report on Mali. He also listened to my other adventures, and ordered me to stay in Fez. He wanted to have these stories written down for the amusement of my family and others. Travel writing, especially accounts of the Hajj, were a popular form of writing at the time. So I was commanded to
"dictate an account of the cities which he had seen in his travel, and of the interesting events which had clung to his memory, and that he should speak of those whom he had met of the rulers of countries, of their distinguished men of learning, and of their pious saints."
This book of mine became very famous.
Here are some interesting facts:
1. My travels covered 44 modern-day countries.
2. During one trip I was chased down and robbed by bandits.
3. I survived mostly on the gifts and hospitality of fellow Muslims.
4. Some historians doubt that I really travelled to all the places mentioned in my book.
5. I married several times during my journeys and had a few kids.
