Although I can see why people thought that dropping bombs on Japan was the only right answer, I believe the US did not have to go to such lengths just to get Japan to surrender.
The Cheif of the US air corps, General Hap Arnold, stated that "It always appeared to us that, atomic bomb or no atomic bomb, the Japanese were already on the verge of collapse", which means that Japan was already weak and the War would have ended soon enough. The bombing was unnecessary when Japan would not have been much of a threat soon.

Also, this atomic bombing did not just affect the Japanese military, but the innocent people and children. Hisato Itoh, a 10-year-old Japanese boy in Hiroshima exclaimed "People who are burned so badly that the skin of their bodies is peeling off in red strips are raising shrieking cries that sound as though the victims would die in the next minute or two." This child and many others had to witness this horrific event that is going to stay with them for the rest of their lives. The US made a selfish decision and did not think about the innocent people that would have to die, or the things that little kids would have to see.
