Jem Finch is a playful, curious, and
smart boy. Only nine years old, he plays
with his sister, Scout, and their best
buddy, Dill, on a daily basis.
Jem never says no to a dare. One day,
Dill comes up with an idea to leave the
neighborhood "monster," Boo, a note on
their back porch.

Dill's idea did not work, and they
end up almost getting shot by
Nathan Radley, Boo's brother!
Atticus demands that Jem and
Scout stop pestering the
Radley's. Because Jem is
obedient to Atticus's wishes, he
obeys.

After that, Boo started attempting to
communicate with Scout and Jem. He would leave
them toys and trinkets in a knot of a tree near
their house. Jem realized that Boo was not a
monster, he was as innocent as a child.
One day, Mr. Radley was filling the hole in the
tree with cement. As the gloom of being cut off
from his mysterious friend lingered over him,
Jem was heartbroken.

As time drew on, Jem started to
realize how the world worked, how
not everything was fair or right.
His father, Atticus, was to defend
a black man, Tom Robinson, against
charges of a white women and her
father, Bob Ewell.

This meant that no matter how
innocent Tom was, the white,
racist, jury would find him guilty
and sentence him to death.
Atticus did all he could to help
Tom, but he knew they wouldn't
win their case.

That night, Atticus had to go down to
city square. He took nothing with him
but a book, a light, and a chair.
Jem started to get a strange feeling,
like Atticus was in danger. He sneaked
past his Aunt to go check on Atticus
downtown. Scout woke up and she
followed him with Dill.
