"England in Sketches" by Peter Milward is the textbook we used when I was a college student. I was fascinated by the essay and England at that time. The scene of "The Hay Wain," painted by John Constable, has become my favorite painting since then. The soft touch attracted me most and strengthened my eagerness to visit England. I do not think I will have a chance to go to England for the rest of my life. So, I decided to visit some places introduced in the essay virtually.

Jane Austen (1775 - 1817) was a writer who
first gave the novel its distinctly modern character through her treatment of ordinary people in everyday life. She published four novels, among which I studied "Pride and Prejudice" in college.

Thomas Hardy (1840- 1928) was an English novelist and poet. His cottage looks like a charming little doll's house, according to the author, Peter Milward. It was the right size for Thomas Hardy.

"The Hay Wain" is my favorite painting of John Constable (1776 - 1837). He is famous for his landscapes of the Suffolk countryside, where he was born and lived. "Willie Lot's Cottage" is the house which features in "The Hay Wain." I wish I had a chance to visit the place.
