Once, there was a boy named Markandey whose parents were given a boon that he would only be able to live for sixteen years. When he turned 16, Yamaraj, the Lord of death, came to take him as his time on Earth was over. But since he kept on worshipping Lord Shiva so, Lord Shiva appeared and blessed him with eternal life. He invented Maha Mrityunjay Mantra and later was known as Rishi Markandey.
