Once upon a time, deep 

down under the ocean,  

warm iron sulfide seeped 

through ocean vents and 

combined with cool ocean 

water to form iron sulfide 

bubbles.

Then, the bubbles slowly 

became structures that looked 

like chimneys. Inside of these 

chimney-like structures many 

reactions were happening. 

The reactions that were 

going on inside of the 

compartments created 

the possible beginnings 

of cell walls. 

Reactions like this were 

possible and frequent because 

of the high temperatures 

coming out of the under water 

vents   mixed with the cooler 

water already at the bottom of 

the ocean.
