The moon is a wonderful thing to look at. It lights up the 

sky when it is nighttime, but have you ever noticed that 

the moon looks different at different times of the month?

This is because the moon goes through phases as it 

rotates around the earth.

The moon has eight phases:

1. New Moon

2. New Crescent

3. First Quarter

4.Waxing Gibbous

5. Full Moon

6. Waning Gibbous

7. Last Quarter

8. Old Crescent

The first phase of the moon is called the new 

moon.

This is the phase when the moon is not very visible 

from Earth.

Here is a diagram of a new

The second phase of the moon is called the new 

crescent.

This is the phase when the moon is slightly more 

visible from Earth, leaving a tiny sliver to be seen.

The third phase of the moon is called the first 

quarter.

This is the phase when the moon looks like a half 

moon, with the darker shadow on the left side of 

the moon.

The fourth phase of the moon is called the waxing 

gibbous.

This is the phase when a lot of the moon is very 

visible from Earth and only a small part of the left 

side of the moon is covered in shadow..
