Hi, I'm Mia! Welcome to the Arctic
region of Canada. I am going to tell
you all about the Arctic including its
physical features, the resources
that can be found there and the
human impact on the environment.
Come along, and lets learn about the
region together.

Here is a map of the geographical regions of Canada.
As you can see, the Arctic region covers the
territories of Nunavut, the Northwest Territories
and some of the Yukon.

How was the Arctic region
formed?
The majority of the arctic
region is made up of the
arctic ocean. The arctic
ocean was developed when
the Eurasian plate, which is
mostly Europe and Asia,
moved towards the Pacific
plate. This movement
created what is called a
basin. The basin is now the
Arctic ocean.
This movement of plate
tectonics is called divergent
plate boundaries.

Since the Arctic region is
mainly composed of the
Arctic ocean, the region is
mostly thick packs of ice.
These ice blocks can measure
up to 9ft thick!
During the summer, the ice is
partially melted, covering the
ocean in large icebergs.
These icebergs were formed
when they broke off from
glaciers or broke away from
the ice that was once
covering the ocean.

The Arctic region is the northernmost region and
covers 25% of Canada. Because it is so cold and
the ground is covered in permafrost, very little
plants are able to grow here. The only two plants
that can survive here are lichen and moss.

Below is a climatograph of Yellowknife. Yellowknife is a
town located in the Arctic region. During the winter
months, the temperature can get to be colder than -30
and in the summer months it still stays fairly cool. Also
the arctic gets little rainfall.

The people living in the Arctic
region are faced with the natural
hazards of the area. The biggest
natural danger in the Arctic is
the extreme temperatures.
During the coldest months,
temperatures can drop to -40 and
colder. Other hazards of the
Arctic are the glaciers as they
have the potential to crack and
anyone can easily slip into a
crevasse. Also being in a generally
isolated area can be dangerous at
times when help is needed.
