Reconstruction is the time period 

of rebuilding the country. After 

the Civil War the country was 

Physically, Politically and 

Socially at the end. It's goals 

was to unit the country especially 

the south, deal with all the  

freed salves, because they have no 

money and property. And the rising 

political power.  

there are two different 

sentiments, how the reconstruction 

should happen. The president want 

to be friendly to the south but 

the Congress want to be harsh. So 

they decline the Reconstruction. 

There were few problems during 

reconstruction, after the Civil 

War the south was destroyed and 

the politic work program tries to 

help, with building orphanages, 

schools and hospitals. Also the 

government spending bad credit so 

the increase taxes. And there was 

a division of Republican party 

(Carpetbaggers, Scalawags, African 

American). The African American 

take more role in political 

activities. 

The Carpetbaggers were northerners 

who moved south to take the 

conditions of the poor 

southerners. And the Scalawags are 

southern democrats, who joined the 

Republican party to get more 

power. 

The property values goes down 

because the most were destroyed. 

The government raised the taxes 

and the people lost their homes. 

Also the cotton price goes down, 

they try to grow more cotton, but 

it was difficult, because there 

where no slaves anymore.  

They were not nice to the African 

American and they bring in the 

"Black Codes". The Ku Klux Klan 

was build. An other problem was 

that the African American don't 

have much money, any job skills or 

homes. The church and other 

organizations try to help them. 

They invited Sharecropping and 

Tenant Farming, the first one in 

when owners provides land and 

their material to the African 

American, but they earn only a 

little amount. The second one is 

when they rent land by there own 

an buy their materials, but they 

have to had money for this.

Abraham Lincoln has a plan how to 

rebuild the union. He want to 

preserve the union. He don't want 

to punish the Confederates or the 

south. 

Wade-Davis Bill want let the 

Congress do the reconstruction. 

Lincoln was against it. 

The Plan from the Radical 

Republicans was to puinish the 

south, free all the slaves and 

give them rights. 

Andrew Johnson want to continue 

Lincoln's plan, ratify the 13th 

Amendment,   

which prohibit slavery at all. 

The Freedman's Bureau provide 

clothes, food and basic needs for 

the slaves and poor white people. 

In the Civil Rights Act of 1866 

the Black Codes doesn't exist 

anymore and the 14th

Amendment, which maid the African 

American and the white equal and 

the African american can get a 

citizenship. Johnson inlay veto 

but the Radical Republicans 

overrideveto.   

In the Reconstruction Act of 1867 

were martial laws in the south and 

strict military districts with 

harsh rules. Johnson inlay veto 

again, and again the Radical 

Republicans overrideveto. 

They now Johnson want to fire Sec. 

of war, and so the create a law 

that the president cannot fire any 

cabinet members without Senate. 

Right after this Johnson fired the 

Sec. of war and had been 

impeached, this was called Tenure 

of Office Act.  

In 1868 was a election between the 

Democrat Horatio Seymour and the 

Republican Ulysses S. Grant. The 

winner was Grant.
