This is Mathew Multiplication, Ava Addition, Suzie Subtraction and Diego Division! They love to use their every day problems to learn and teach math. Let’s see what they’ve been up to!

Suzie Subtraction loves to collect shells at the beach. One day she collected seven shells but dropped two in the sand. How many shells did Suzie have left to bring home?

I had seven shells and I lost two. I have five left!

Suzie had seven shells, then had two less. She had five left over. To solve her problem, Suzie had seven and subtracted two and got five.

7 – 2 = 5

Diego Division and his family love pizza. He lives with his mom, dad, and sister. One night they were sharing a pizza pie. If they have one pizza that was cut into eight slices and four people living in their house, how many slices will everyone get to eat?

There were eight slices and we divided them between the four of us. We each get two slices!

There were eight slices of pizza divided between four people. They each got two slices of pizza. To solve his problem, Diego divided eight by four, and the quotient was two.

8 ÷ 4 = 2

Ava Addition loves animals. She has four pet birds. Ava also wants three snakes. If she gets the snakes, how many pets will she have all together?
