
In 1607 the first English settlement had been established and founded in Jamestown, Virginia 60 miles up the James River.


In 1616 Virginia's settlers learned how to grow tobacco. They planted it because it was a cash crop.



Maryland produced tobacco on large plantations, and labored servants and enslaved workers.

The first English immigrants were a small group of Puritan separatists later called Pilgrims.
Years later, Massachusetts Bay company sent a large group of Puritans and established another Massachusetts settlement.





Local Natives helped colonists with farming, fishing and hunting until they soon became independent.





As settlements expanded they made new colonies in New England.


Soon after this, more colonies expanded and more immigrants came to form new American colonies.
