Meet Miss McNeil!
Miss McNeil is a second year teacher but this is her first year in third grade. Her first year was spent in 1st grade so teaching complex, in depth reading comprehension during guided reading groups is new.


Identifying the Problem
Miss McNeil came to me in September after we had finished running record assessments on the students. Her concern was that she had several children who were fluent and accurate readers but their ability to comprehend what they were reading was far below satisfactory.
Analyzing the Data
Together, we grabbed the running record data sheets and formed a small group of kids whose accuracy was high but comprehension was concerning. We went through the specific style of questions that they were missing and made a chart displaying 5 specific comprehension points that we wanted to focus on.

3. Main Idea with Supporting Details (F/NF)
4. Text Features (NF)
5. Text Structures (NF)
