Marie's
Diary
Sept, 1954
Dear Diary,
Today is my first day of grade 4!
I am so happy to be back, seeing my
friends and meeting my teacher.
Being a student at St. Basil's
Catholic school is great!
Dear Diary,
School is getting alot harder these
days
and my teacher is expecting me to
know
so much stuff!!
Johnny didn't listen today so the
teacher
gave him the strap! That's what
happens
when students don't listen, they get
slapped over the hand with a long piece
of leather with a handle; OUCH! im
glad it wasn't me. Then Tommy had to
write lines on the board since he talked
during Mrs. Lockes lesson.
Dear Diary,
Today was a very busy day!
We started a new book, we had our
dictation test and we measured our
height during science!
Mrs. Locke always tells us how the
most important things for us to
learn are the three R's!
Reading, wRighting and aRithmetic.
Sally got into trouble with the
truant officer today because she
got caught playing hooky! What's
worse is that she had to go down to
the principals office. Glad i never
stay home from school, only if i am
sick!
Dear Diary,
Today Mrs. Locke started talking
about highschool! She told us that
we are only given one choice of
school to go to and it is called
Brantford Catholic High School. My
brother goes there and half of his
friends decided not to finish school!
Mom told me that very few students
choose to go onto University and go
right to work instead!
Dear Diary,
Today was just another day,
nothing exciting really happened
A few of the "rich" girls tried to boss
me around but I just ignored them.
I don't understand why they think
they are better than everyone
just because they wear brand name
clothes and their parents drive
expensive cars. We learned about
how women usually were the ones
to quit school at an early age to be
the caregivers at home. When I got
home I asked my mom if that's what
she did and she said yes, my
grandma did aswell.
Dear Diary,
My brother came home very excited
today and at supper time he told all of
us that he got a job!
We were all so proud of him!
Especially since he graduated from
highschool last week!
I hope i'm that lucky when i'm finished
school!
what school was like when
grandma went?It has changed so
much since then!
school, I don't like going to
school its so much work! I agree! we always get
so much homework!
