Integration; accepting everyone as a group to unify
What was the protest of Ruby Bridges?
Ruby Bridges grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was born in 1954, an important year within the civil rights movement. Growing up, Ruby was one of the smartest children in her class but was never given the same resources due to the color of her skin. This form of discrimination, though, would not stop Ruby from fulfilling her academic dreams.

Discrimination; Unfairness towards someone based on a personal factor.
Ruby's story takes place in the south where the discrimination issue was an everyday problem. Even after Brown Vs Board of Education, schools in New Orleans refused to allow for integration.
The south, historically, had never easily allowed for equality when it came to skin color. The communities there in the 1960s experienced segregation as well as extreme racism.
Segregation; The separation, especially during the 1900s, between people due to their skin color.

The issue that Ruby had to fight against sourced from traditional racism in her community. Years of discrimination before her resulted in her social obstacles, but she pushed through. In reality, she had to fight for her education while everyone was against her.

The William T. Frantz elementary school was home to the main conflict facing Ruby Bridges. Demonstrating her incredible knowledge, Ruby was one of three African American children to pass the test required to attend the school. However, traveling to school on her first day brought Ruby even more obstacles she had to overcome.
