2nd Grade Class
2013-2014
Temple Terrace
Elementary

This book was created from our in-class study of poetry.
We wrote three different types of poems, a haiku, a color
poem, and a poem inspired by the book, "I Don't Want a
Posh Dog,' by Emma Dodd.
A haiku is a traditional Japanese unrhymed poem. it
follows a specific structure. It has three lines. The first
line contains 5 syllables, the second line contains 7
syllables, and the third line contains 5 syllables. our haikus
are "What am I?" haikus. Can you guess what animal each
student has written their haiku about? Look on the back
page for answers.

A color poem is another structured poem. Students
were asked to write about their favorite color. They
used adjectives to describe how each color looked,
smelled, tasted, sounded, felt, and made them feel.
Finally, we used "I Don't Want a Posh Dog" as
inspiration for our own poems. Students worked in pairs
or groups to write about something they didn't want
and something they did. We tried to use as many
adjectives as possible to describe our "don't wants and
wants".
