Chapter 1
Introduction
The Panthera tigris altaica is the magnificent tiger is known in formal scientific terms, is one of the largest of the wild cats to walk the surface of the earth. Its golden-red coat is characterized by bold black (or very dark brown) stripes, under which a strong, lithesome body is built for the hunt.
Siberian Tiger is a strong animal. The Siberian Tiger is the largest member of the tiger family. Siberian Tiger lives in the Russian Far East with a small number ranging across the border into China and possibly North Korea. On average, a modern male Siberian tiger weighs between 352.7-418.8 lb (160-190 kg). Females are smaller with an average body mass between 242.5-286.6 lb (110-130 kg).
Chapter 2
Appearance
The Siberian tiger is larger than the Bengal tiger; its pelage is thicker and brighter. Reddish body covered with narrow black transverse stripes. The pattern of every tiger is unique, as fingerprints: you won't find two tigers with identical patterns.
Easily recognized by its coat of reddish-orange with dark stripes, the Siberian tiger is the largest wild cat in the world. The big cat's tail is three feet long. About the same as eight ten-year-old kids. It stands three feet tall with teeth four inches long and claws as long as house keys.
Chapter 3
Behavior
Tigers are solitary with the Siberian tiger being more than most. Due to their small population and the harsh climate of their wintery home, Siberians have the largest range of any tiger subspecies. They roam for miles in search of food.
A female tiger gives birth to a litter of three or four cubs, who she will care for until they are a year and a half old. These cubs quadruple in size during their first month! The powerful predator generally hunts alone, able to bring down prey such as deer and antelope. Tigers wait until dark to hunt. The tiger sprints to an unsuspecting animal, usually pulling it off its feet with its teeth and claws. If the prey animal is large, the tiger bites its throat to kill it; smaller prey is usually killed when the tiger breaks its neck. Tigers have been known to eat up to 60 pounds of meat in one night, but more often they consume about 12 pounds during a meal. It may take days for a tiger to finish eating its kill. The cat eats until it's full, and then covers the carcass with leaves and dirt. The tiger comes back to feed some more.
Chapter 4
Fun Facts
The Siberian tiger is the largest subspecies of tigers and the world’s largest cat. An adult tiger averages 70-82 inches in head and body length, with the male being larger than the female tiger. The male averages 77 inches while the female averages 72 inches. Its long and flexible tail measures 39 inches in males and 36 inches in females. Historically, a wild male Siberian tiger weighed 475 pounds while the female weighed 303 pounds. However, the contemporary tigers weigh an average of 389 pounds but can weigh up to 600 pounds. One specimen raised in captivity weighed an impressive 1025 pounds. The second-largest cat is the lion, followed by the jaguar, cougar, and leopard respectively.
About 95% of the Siberian tigers in the world are found in eastern Russia. A small population inhabits Northern China but the number depends on the movement of tigers crossing China’s border with Russia. Although the tigers ascribe to two small areas in Russia, their range is greater than other subspecies of tigers. The animals can travel considerably (up to 1,000 km from south to north in eastern Russia) in search of food. The Amur tigers are mainly found in Sikhote-Alin Mountains and Primorye and a small number inhabit the mountain system of East Manchuria.
