

Early Navigation Acts (1650)
The Navigation Acts (passed by Parliament) stopped the colonies from trading with other countries, mainly France. England wanted to keep all of the Colonies resources and didn't want to share them with other countries.

1754, A territorial dispute occurred between the French and British which was known as the French and Indian War. The resolution of this conflict answered the question of whether or not the land was open for trade and settlement.

In 1763, a proclamation was made by the king that prohibited the colonists from expanding west of the Appalachian mountains. This angered the colonists because this land was only acquired by the British post- war due to their aid. The colonists felt as if the land belonged.

A year after the king’s proclamation, he then imposed an act called the Sugar Act. Taxes were increased and enforced in order to found the expanding responsibilities of the British Empire.

In 1765, paper became taxed which was intended to fund the British troops who were stationed in the colonies in order to prevent smuggling. This was also known as the Stamp Act.

The first quartering act outlined the locations where the British soldiers were able to find room and board in the American Colonies.

Stamp Act Congress
The British attempted to tax the American colonists directly. This is considered taxation without representation. The Stamp Act Congress passed a declaration that stated that the American Colonists were equal to the British Citizens.

The repeal of the Stamp Act came to be successful because Britain realized the difference between internal and external taxes. The Declaratory Act passed to affirm British Power in order to legislate for the colonies "in all cases whatsoever"

The Townshend Act was passed in 1767, and commonly known as the Revenue Act. This resulted in the taxing of many imported goods such as glass, lead, and tea.

Townshend duties (taxes) were repealed (cancelled) in order to keep the colonial boycott from getting worse. The colonists stopped buying British goods and this wasn’t good for England... thus England was no longer making money off of the colonists. They kept the tea tax to remind the colonies of British authority. This still continued to upset the colonists.
