What are an Articles ? 

The word a ,an and the are called articles.  A and an are indefinite article and the is definite articles . 

When to use article 'a'?

We use a with singular noun which begin with consonant sounds .

Examples using article a :

1.) Brinda goes to school on a bicycle .

(Here bicycle is a singular noun and letter 'b' is a consonant. Hence we use article a .)

2.) I gave him a  one - rupee coin .

(Here one-rupee is a singular noun and though 'o' is not a consonant, but the sound of the letter 'o'  is a consonant sound . Hence , we use article a .)

3.) She lives in a small town with her family .

4.) I saw a butterfly on a flower . 

5.) Sita sang a song.

When to use article 'an' ?

We use article an with  singular nouns which begin with vowel sounds . (Vowels are a , e , i, o , u )

Examples using article an :

1.) Mr. Sawant is an  honest police officer.

(Though alphabet 'h' is not a vowel but 'h' is silent when we pronounce the word honest . The singular noun honest  begins with a  vowel sound and so articles 'an' is used in this example.)

2.) It was an enjoyable holiday .

(The singular noun enjoyable begins with with  vowel sound )

3.) I have an  appointment with the doctor today.

4.) An umbrella is a useful thing during rainy season as well as  summer season .

We normally do not use a and an before :

. plural nouns

.   uncountable nouns

.  the names of meals (breakfast,                  lunch,  dinner)

 .material nouns (gold, silver , etc .)

  .the names of continents , countries ,        states , cities and towns.
